EUREKA – A conference title was on the line in Woodford County in Week 8 as the 7-0(5-0) Eureka Hornets hosted the 6-1(5-0) Tri-Valley Vikings.

The game began with fireworks as the Vikings pounced on a fumble on the opening kickoff of the contest. Tri-Valley took the lead off of the turnover as quarterback Cole Klein found the end zone on a short run.

Both teams showed out on the defensive side of the ball in the first quarter, as Eureka’s Ben Lapp snagged an interception on the third drive of the game. The Hornets were unable to put points on the board following the change in possession.

Klein showed off his speed early in the second quarter, sprinting for a 40-yard touchdown to give the Vikings a two touchdown lead. Eureka got on the scoreboard off an Austin Gerber scramble inside the five yard line, but the Hornets could not convert on the extra point.

Special team’s continued to play a big role for Tri-Valley, as Cade Danko took the momentum back with an 80-yard return to give the Vikings a 22-6 lead at halftime.

Danko added another touchdown to the scoring column for the Vikings in the third quarter, before Gerber connected with wide receiver Andrew Zimmerman to take the score to 29-12 heading into the final quarter.

Neither team was able to put points on the board in the fourth quarter, which gave the Vikings a 29-12 win.

Tri-Valley Head Coach Josh Roop and Lanz Underground Player of the Game Cade Danko spoke with WJBC’s Eric Lapan following the game.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
