BLOOMINGTON – Central Catholic High School has been awarded $1 million to focus on student mental health needs.

The gift was announced by school president Sean Foster at the school’s “Saints Alive” dinner auction Saturday evening.

Jan Egbers who founded Commercial Packaging, and Jim Bob Morris who founded Morris Packaging, who are the family of Central Catholic alum’s, donated the large sum to the school.

“We are honored to make this gift to Central Catholic. Our family has seen the complex need to provide this type of support, which requires more specialized and long-term care,” Morris said. “This gives us the opportunity to partner with other organizations in our area to provide a more cohesive approach to student mental health.”

The money will go to expanding the schools counselling program by establishing a wellness counsellor.

This will be $1 million of the $10 million the school is looking for to add to its “VISION” campaign which is a five year plan to help with student mental health and wellness needs according to the school.

The school says it is important for them to play a role in students health and well-being as students spend a large amount of time on campus.

“Central Catholic has been, and continues to be, a significant asset to our Bloomington-Normal community. Our family is proud to be aiding in its growth and prosperity,” Egbers said. “The Egbers/Morris family hopes this gift can help further Central Catholic`s mission and provide all students mental health and wellness needs.”

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
