BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to split the city’s Economic and Community Development department into two separate departments.
The approval by the council will create the Department of Community Impact and Enhancement – which will focus on grants, community development projects and downtown Bloomington.
There will also be the Development Services Department, which will oversee economic development, planning and zoning among other things.
City officials said the creation of the two departments will not require additional hires, as current staff will be reorganized into the two departments.
Meanwhile, the Bloomington City Council unanimously passed a resolution to ask the Illinois General Assembly to protect the Mahomet Aquifer from CO2 storage and pipelines.
The council joined other municipalities in McLean, Dewitt, and Champaign Counties that recently passed similar resolutions. The Mahomet Aquifer is the largest in the state.
