BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Police Department has released the numbers from a statewide campaign to make the roads safer during the holidays.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that ran from Dec. 13 until Jan. 2 that was funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration led to what the police department called a “safer holiday.”
The campaign led to Bloomington police giving two citations for improper child restraints, 20 speeding tickets, two tickets for distracted driving, 20 citations for other categories and even one arrest for possession of methamphetamine.
“Thanks to the drivers in our community who contributed to a safer highway system this holiday season. I applaud our officers who worked extra hours to increase visibility, address bad driving behaviors through enforcement, and improve traffic safety. BPD’s collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation to leverage traffic safety grants, which assisted in this effort, is invaluable,” said Chief Jamal Simington.
The campaign is designed to emphasize the collective commitment to safer roadways, particularly during high-risk times like the holidays.
