MCLEAN COUNTY – The McLean County Health Department is asking residents to help celebrate locals making the community healthier.

The department is looking for nominations for the 2025 Public Health Award, said Marianne Manko, a department spokeswoman.

She said the award will be presented by the McLean County Board of Health and the health department to recognize a county resident who promotes public health practices and principles.

Health Board president Robert Kohlhase said the board first presented the award in 1993.

“Success in maintaining and improving our community is done through strong collaborative public health initiatives,” he said. “We are excited to support and recognize this important award that highlights individuals or groups that may be unsung contributors to make our community better, if not for their efforts.”

Past winners have come from many backgrounds, including volunteers at local schools, medical professionals serving underserved residents and individuals expanding health programs through non-profits.

The deadline to submit a nominee is Feb. 28. The winner is scheduled to be recognized on April 9. A submission form to nominate someone and full guidelines are available on the health department’s website.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
