BLOOMINGTON – The top law enforcement officer in McLean County said he will not seize children from schools regarding their immigration status.

And that sentiment was backed up by his colleague in Peoria County as well.

McLean County Sheriff Matt Lane said in a Facebook post, that it was brought to his attention that people have been concerned with where he stands on the issue of deportation and how he does not intend to seize children from school.

“It is true that I do not intend to send deputies into schools to seize children. At no time have I, or anyone from my office stated that we would refuse to assist Federal Agencies on operations involving criminal matters that threaten public safety,” the post said.

Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins, when reached Saturday, said he agreed with Lane’s thoughts. Attempts to reach Woodford County were not successful. Tazewell County Sheriff Jeff Lower was out of the area.

Lane stressed his office will be enforcing the law in accordance with state and federal laws.

“I am aware of Federal and State laws that will be driving the enforcement action from my office. Simply put, the McLean County Sheriff’s Office will be enforcing the law,” he said in the release.

He encourages anyone who wants to know his position to “go straight to the source and not draw their own conclusions.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
