BLOOMINGTON – Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe issued a statement Monday in the wake of anti-Semitic flyers that were found in Downtown Bloomington over the weekend.

“I am deeply disappointed and disturbed by the anti-Semitic flyers that were placed on doors and windows in Downtown Bloomington over the weekend,” he said. “This kind of hateful rhetoric has no place in our community. Bloomington is built on respect, inclusivity, and unity, and we will not allow messages of division to take root here.

“To our Jewish neighbors and all those impacted—I stand with you. The City stands with you. We are committed to fostering a community where everyone feels safe and valued,” Mwilambwe said.

The Bloomington Police Department is looking into the matter and encourages anyone with information to come forward. Reports can be made by contacting the Officer Molly Monahan with the Bloomington Police Department at (309) 820-8888.

Noah Tang said he was walking on Main Street in Bloomington Sunday when he first saw some flyers affixed to the Pantagraph building. He took those down and threw them out. Later, he was passing by Red Racoon Games which is also on Main Street and saw another flyer.

It was then, he said, that he chose to call city officials. He believes it was all by the same person as the flyers, about 10 in all, used the same blue painters’ tape, had the same logos and were about the same size.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
