BLOOMINGTON – The man who will assume the role of interim city manager in Bloomington next week would like the word ‘interim’ removed from his title.

City aldermen unanimously approved Steve Rasmussen to replace David Hales until they find a permanent replacement.

“I think we’ll have to wait to see what happens, but at this point I’d certainly like to consider myself a candidate for the permanent position,” said Rasmussen.

Downtown Bloomington property owner Tim Tilton urged the council to make Rasmussen the permanent city manager, saying Rasmussen is someone who brings people together.

“We feel that he’s qualified, experienced, and has a very positive relationship with the department heads in this city and would be a great bridge-builder for our future in that position,” Tilton said.

Rasmussen has been Bloomington’s assistant city manager for the past three years.

“I try to work hard to bring people together, and to have them cooperate because we’re stronger together than we are individually,” Rasmussen told the council.

With his new responsibilities, Rasmussen’ salary will be about $170,200. He’ll start running city government next week, replacing David Hales who’s leaving to become Joliet’s city manager.
