Livi Sonetz’ presence felt as Normal West softball teammates play home opener

People with heavy hearts and tear-filled eyes packed Maxwell Park Thursday for a ceremony to remember Normal West High School softball player Olivia Sonetz at the Wildcats’ home opener against Metamora.

Livi died only a week ago from injuries she suffered in a car crash at Mitsubishi Motorway and Raab Road, just west of Normal.

The McLean County State’s Attorney’s office and Illinois State Police are still investigating the driver of a pick-up truck who was reportedly speeding at the time of the crash.

Ellie Sonetz, wearing her sister Livi’s jersey, took her place during starting lineups.

“She was my best friend, my sister, my soul mate,” said Elllie. “We had a connection I’ll never be able to have with anybody else. I miss her dearly, but I know she’s with me everyday.”

The softball team released blue balloons into the sky. Blue was Livi’s favorite color.

The Wildcats went on to win the game 5-0.
