SPRINGFIELD – The resource officer that shot an alleged school shooter in Dixon was honored at the Illinois Capitol on Wednesday.

Mark Dallas confronted and stopped a teenager with a gun before anyone could be killed. Dallas was a Dixon police officer before working as an armed school resource officer. He urged lawmakers that armed support is needed in the state’s schools.

“You will face challenges in opposition to your support for placement of school resource officers in our schools,” Dixon told lawmakers. “They will say that idea costs too much. They will argue that police offices shouldn’t be in our school hallways, but you are our children’s heroes.

“Heroes don’t run from adversity, they face it head on.”

Dixon said it’s a new normal – having school shootings in the United States. That, he said, needs to change.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
