International grain buyers tour all things agriculture in Illinois

Illinois is showing the best of agriculture to foreign buyers on a statewide tour.

Monday morning’s itinerary included a lock and dam at Alton and GSI, a maker of grain bins in Assumption, in Christian County.

Why should you travel internationally when you can just look at a computer to see what is going on?

“The world is changing, and marketing is changing,” Warren Goetsch, deputy director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, tells WJBC News, “but I don’t believe there’s a replacement for rolling the cob and kicking the clod; actually being out there and seeing the equipment and all the other inputs we have to make the ag production in this country and in this state be successful.”

“I’m stunned by how big the fields are, lots of crops of corn being harvested,” said Ji-seong “Joshua” Kim of South Korea. He is making his first visit to Illinois, joining buyers from Peru, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic on this week’s tour.

Also on tap: farms, labs, and the Chicago Board of Trade.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
