BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington-Normal is on the verge of landing a Marshalls department store, perhaps as soon as next year, although the location and exact timing of the store’s opening are not known.

Bloomington Economic Development Director Austin Grammer said he’s not had direct contact with Marshalls owner, The TJX Companies. However, Grammer said Marshalls is one of several retailers looking at expanding into Bloomington-Normal.

What’s also unclear is whether the two Twin-City governments will get into a bidding war for Marshalls. Grammer doubts the two communities will try to outbid the other because all of McLean County benefits from the retailer opening shop here.

“If Bloomington or Normal can partner with a shopping center owner to grab that retailer and get (it) to invest in Bloomington-Normal, that’s a win for the entire community,” said Grammer.

He said it’s truly a buyer’s market for retailers because of all the vacancies here and elsewhere across the nation.

“With the amount of vacancies that we have in our market, the number of opportunities and potential locations that a retailer like Marshalls could consider now, increases the odds that the number of retailers that many of our residents have been longing for now have ample opportunity to enter into our market,” Grammer also said.

Marshalls parent company owns TJ Maxx and HomeGoods, which have Twin-City stores.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
