BLOOMINGTON – With snow and cold temperatures throughout central Illinois, the risk of frozen pipes will be an issue according to a local insurer.

State Farm Insurance says more claims were paid in Illinois for winter water losses than any other state in the country. With 1,546 claims, the total payout for Illinois in 2018 reached nearly $28,000,000, with the average cost per claim just under $18,000.

The next closest state was New York at 1,364 claims and an average payout of $27,000 per claim. Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas rounded out the top five states with the most water peril claim counts in 2018.

State Farm offers several tips with the colder temperatures to prevent frozen pipes.

Some of those include opening cabinet doors to allow heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances, and if traveling not setting the thermostat below 55°F.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
