BLOOMINGTON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) warns of an immediate court challenge should President Donald Trump declare a national emergency to build a wall on the southern U.S. border.
Durbin wonders how future presidents might act if President Trump uses his emergency powers over what the Democratic lawmaker said is a “manufactured crisis” on the southern border.
“If any president can declare a national emergency over several miles of fencing for goodness sake, there’s hardly any limit,” said Durbin, who’s second highest ranking Senate Democrat.
Durbin made his comments during an appearance in Bloomington Friday evening before returning to Washington for Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.
