Desert Storm remembrance ceremony

Almost three decades later, we still remember Operation Desert Storm. (Dave Dahl/WJBC)

SPRINGFIELD – 28 years after the Desert Storm ceasefire, the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs honored the Illinoisans who served — and the eighteen who died — during an annual ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.

The main speaker was Lance Zedric, a Gulf War era veteran and author whose books include Silent Warriors of World War II.

“If, by chance, these eighteen men could be among us today,” asked Zedric, “how might they feel about this proceeding? Would they be embarrassed about the fuss being made over them? Or would they simply smile and nod knowingly among themselves?”

Zedric also quoted George Washington that men’s desire to serve is proportional to the appreciation they receive from those at home.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
