McLean County creates resource for vaping intervention

BLOOMINGTON – Respiratory illnesses all over the country have been linked to vaping. The McLean County Health Department has organized a group that will act as a resource for vaping intervention.

Health Department spokesperson Dion McNeal said the health promotion team will help students recognize the dangers, and consider why kids are turning to vaping.

He added that while the intervention group is targeted at students, it also is for adults to become more aware of the vaping trend.

“These devices are starting to look like USB flash drives. Some parents and teachers aren’t able to identify if these are actual devices that students can use for vaping,” McNeal said.

McNeal said some local organizations have already reached out about using the group. He said those interested in using the program can contact 309-888-5446.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has reported 42 cases of severe pulmonary disease linked to vaping, including one death.

While no cases have been reported in McLean County, some have been found in Tazewell, Peoria, and Champaign Counties.
