SPRINGFIELD – While the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois sees much of America through the lens of Roe v. Wade, that’s not all that’s on the agenda.
Colleen Connell told the City Club of Chicago the U.S. Supreme Court is examining whether LGBTQ status and gender identity fall under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
“Embedded in the technical arguments about the scope of congressional authority and what congress really intended to protect in Title VII.” Connell said, “are insidious suggestions that gay people transgender people are not deserving of the full protection of the law; that our transgender client is not a real woman.”
Connell says reversing the decision which legalized abortion puts the nation on a path which may as well undo protections against discrimination based on gender, race, and religion.
