SPRINGFIELD– Company’s coming – up to 118 guests plus their support staffs. And after hosting basketball games, future President Donald Trump, and Alice Cooper, Bank of Springfield Center general manager Brian Oaks says he’s ready to take on House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) and the rest of the Illinois House of Representatives.

“We’re glad that the building can be of service at a time where we’re without events for an extended period,” said Oaks. “The General Assembly had reached out to us as they were trying to explore options for how they might host this session, and with the building being available and the amount of space that we had, it just ended up working out that they could appropriately social distance the legislators while they are able to meet together.”

The Bank of Springfield Center used to be known as the Prairie Capital Convention Center.

Oaks said most of his staff is on furlough, but some have come back to help. The House – with 118 six-foot tables, each with their own microphone – meets on the main floor of the convention center through Friday.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
