BLOOMINGTON – The local chapter of the Black Lives Matter movement held a public meeting at Miller Park yesterday, where the energy of previous protests was converted into tangible ideas and goals.

The hundreds of people in attendance were broken up into separate groups to discuss various aspects of what to do within the movement going forward.

Those groups included discussions on how to de-escalate confrontations with police, basic first aid training, knowing and understanding protester rights, security training, and marshaling and crowd control.

The sixth group was a caucus for black leaders and attendees to set the agenda moving ahead, providing tangible and attainable ideas.

These ideas included requiring 60 hours of college credit for police officers in line with state officers, hiring more teachers of color, electing a new sheriff, and putting more people of color on the McLean County School Board, among many others.

There was also a voter registration table set up, and a place where black business owners could register their businesses with a Facebook group designed specifically to support black-owned local businesses.

The meeting ended with a moment of reflection and meditation, reminding everyone in attendance of all races to be mindful and respectful throughout their everyday lives.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
