Firefighters extinguish air handler fire at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center

NORMAL – Firefighters from Normal had to put out a fire Tuesday afternoon at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center.

Fire crews were called to the hospital around 3 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the roof on the east side of the building, according to a news release.

Firefighters located smoke coming from a roof vent leading to an air handler unit. Once inside the building, firefighters were able to gain access to the mechanical room which housed the air handler to extinguish the fire.

Fire damage was isolated to the air handler, the ductwork, the roof fan assembly, and the surrounding materials between the roof and the ceiling of the mechanical room.

During the incident, only the affected area of the hospital was evacuated. Hospital operations were otherwise not affected and no patients were relocated.

A dollar estimate of damage is not available and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
