ROCKFORD – A Springfield man faces additional federal charges more than a year after he allegedly shot-to-death a police officer in Rockford and led authorities on a chase ending with his capture in Logan County.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner was a member of the U.S. Marshal’s fugitive task force attempting to arrest Floyd Brown on a Rockford hotel in March of last year.
The U.S. Attorney’s office said a grand jury this week returned indictments that replace previous charges filed last year. In addition to Officer Keltner’s murder, Brown is charged with attempted murder for allegedly trying to kill three task force members, using a deadly and dangerous weapon to forcibly assault the officers, and discharging a firearm while committing a violent crime.
Police were searching for Brown, who was wanted at the time on McLean County warrants alleging he committed four residential burglaries in Bloomington-Normal in 2018.
Bloomington Police almost tracked Brown down after the fourth break-in around Christmas of 2018, but he reportedly got away after a chase and causing a multi-vehicle crash on Veterans Parkway, near G.E. Road.
After the shootout in Rockford, police said Brown led authorities on a chase that ended when he crashed his car on I-55 near Lincoln. Police arrested him there after a six-hour standoff.
Brown is eligible for the death penalty if he’s found guilty because he’s being tried in federal court, in addition to the dozens of state charges against him in Winnebago County Court.
Court records show the government is seeking a court order for Brown to forfeit two loaded 9 mm pistols, two loaded rifles, and 1,062 rounds of ammunition.
