SPRINGFIELD – Only in Springfield?

Illinois Senate Republicans Thursday brought out some bills which could have given the legislature more of a hammer in policing itself – in the wake of indictments and investigations which have seen three lawmakers depart, a fourth also indicted, and the Speaker of the House an apparent focus of a bribery investigation in which Commonwealth Edison has paid $200 million in a “deferred prosecution agreement.”

“There have been exactly zero ethics bills signed into law during that time,” said State Sen. Dale Righter (R-Mattoon).

He and three Senate Republican colleagues appeared at a Zoom news conference to call for bills which would, among other things, allow the attorney general to empanel a statewide grand jury; prohibit lawmakers from lobbying other units of government; and, in a repeat, provide a one-year buffer between someone walking out of the legislature and walking back in as a lobbyist.

The group expressed optimism the supermajority Democrats would work with them, and a brief statement from the Democrats’ spokesman said the Senate should work together to pass meaningful legislation.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
