BLOOMINGTON – Police say the Tuesday morning accident that left one injured and a car split in two followed a traffic stop, with two suspects fleeing police.

Bloomington Police Department Assistant Chief Chad Wamsley said during the traffic stop at Four Seasons Road in southeast Bloomington, the driver fled from the scene and the passenger got into the driver seat and drove away.

The man who ran was caught and arrested by police on unrelated drug and weapon charges, Wamsley said.

The other man who drove away from the traffic stop then crashed the car in the area of South Mercer Avenue and Kemmer Lane just before 11 a.m.

The car, Wamsley said Tuesday, clipped another vehicle and hit a tree when it was split in two.

Ofc. John Fermon, the BPD Public Information Officer, said the injured driver is a 19-year old man from Normal, who was in critical condition Wednesday at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center.

Fermon identified the person who ran from officers, but later captured, as Darrien Davis, 22, of Bloomington.

Davis was wanted on warrants from an unrelated Normal Police investigation in which he faces weapons and drug possession charges.
