BLOOMINGTON – As voters head to the Twin-Cities polls, McLean County’s Clerk provides some last minute recommendations for voters.

Speaking with WJBC’s Scott Miller, McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael said those wishing to cast their vote for the first time could find their polling place online.

“Hopefully, they know how to use a computer and just Google ‘where’s my polling place.’ I’ve done this myself just to see what happens, or (Google) ‘where’s my polling place in Illinois.’ It will direct you to the right links to the right county, and you can look up your polling place locations. You can call us at the (McLean County Election center) office at 1-309-488-4035. We have people manning and womaning the phones to help people as they have questions.”

Some frequent questions Michael said pertains to COVID-19 protocols at polling locations.

“In all of our locations, we took the cleaning supplies, the disinfectants, we have a special judge or judges that are assigned specifically during the day to go around and wipe down areas, and we have extra masks should someone forgot their mask. So we are doing that, and that doesn’t change too much. But, we have the X’s down on the floor for six-foot distancing. So we have monitors; the judges are doing that in addition to their regular duty’s as well. Is to try to remind folks if they are getting a little close together to separate, and you can imaging that will affect your wait line.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
