Tuition, fee hikes approved at Heartland Community College

NORMAL – Students attending Heartland Community College will pay higher tuition and fees starting this summer.

The school’s governing board voted 8-0 Tuesday night for a 3.7% hike, or $6 per credit hour to $169.

The action came as trustees received a report on revenue losses due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and as the college is looking for ways to overcome a budget deficit, and to prepare for anticipated salary increases for faculty.

Administrators also cited decreased utility tax revenue and a potential decline in funding from state government as reasons for raising costs for students.

Still, Heartland leaders said the college remains district’s most affordable higher education option, and costs are competitive with other community colleges.
