NORMAL – Mayoral candidate Marc Tiritilli conceded Wednesday after Tuesday’s initial vote count.
Preliminary results from Tuesday night’s election had 18-year incumbent Mayor Chris Koos some 400 votes ahead of Tiritilli.
Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, McLean County Clerk Kathy Michael estimated there were about 400 mail-in ballots still outstanding, but it is unknown if all of those are Normal ballots.
Four years ago, Tiritilli ran against Mayor Koos, and there was a recount that determined Tiritilli lost by just eleven votes.
On Wednesday, Tiritilli said he learned plenty about the recount process in 2017 and called it “unlikely” that he will pursue a recount this time around.
He also thanked supporters and congratulated Koos on his victory in a Facebook post Wednesday.
I want to thank everyone voted for and worked so hard on my campaign. It was an honor to represent you. While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, I am thankful for being a part of the process. We made our voices heard. In the end, a different outcome was decided, but at least it was an informed choice. That is how our system should work. I congratulate Chris Koos on his victory.

The McLean County Election Commission will still continue to count ballots as mailed votes are received. A final count will likely take up to two weeks.
