BLOOMINGTON – A long-time McLean County Sheriff’s Deputy is putting his name in the hat to become the county’s next Sheriff.

Lt. Matt Lane, Support Services Commander of the McLean County Sheriff’s Department, is running as a Republican to replace Jon Sandage, who is not seeking a third term.

“We have an opportunity to show the public that we are an extension of their communities, their county, and most importantly, their values,” Lane said in a news release. “We have an opportunity to do our part as an agency that is committed to ethically apply the spirit of law and help ensure that all people are treated with dignity and respect.”

Lane’s background includes 24-years of service, including work with diversionary programs and behavioral health services to expand mental health services across the county.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about trust. If we don’t have the trust of the communities we serve, we have nothing,” Lane added.

According to a news release, Lane recognized challenges facing law enforcement across the county that can be addressed on a local level by tackling issues head-on by “supporting a culture based on integrity and trust.”

Lane, who lives with his family in Heyworth, is the first candidate to enter the race. The primary is next June, with the general election in November of next year.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
