NORMAL – A project in Uptown Normal that’s been in the works for well over four years is finally seeing new development.
Normal Town Council decided Monday the new building on East Beaufort Street that will feature a food market, residential and office spaces will be constructed as planned, but it’s being downsized from a five story building to four after one of the partners backed out.
That means the mural, which has become a staple in Uptown Circle, isn’t going anywhere.
“And a new twist, the new building design incorporates the mural into the first floor of the new building,” Town of Normal planner Mercy Davison said. “So it will be visible in one of the tenant spaces. It’s a really exciting project. We’re definitely excited to see it get started. We think it would be really great for Uptown Normal.”
Following the council’s decision, some neighbors are thrilled to know the artwork will remain in Uptown Circle.
Resident Michelle Myszka said the mural has been around for a long time and considers it a part of the town’s history.
“I think it’s good to move forward, but I also love history,” Myszka said. “I’m glad that they’re keeping it for that reason.”
Davidson said neighbors can expect construction in Uptown Circle as the projects slated to continue works in middle of October.
