SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers are sending a revised legislative district map to Gov. JB Pritzker.
The House and Senate came back to Springfield to approve the new political boundaries, considering the recently released data from the 2020 census. The measure was approved along party lines and sponsored by Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero).
“Did everyone get everything they wanted? No, but everyone was heard. We believe the adjusted map provides a reflection of our great state and will continue to be a model for the nation.”
Republicans are vehemently against the maps, saying they were drawn behind closed doors to keep Democrats in power.
“This work is terrible. It is an embarrassment to this chamber. It is inaccurate. It is inadequate, and I think it is absolutely the capstone of disgrace on this entire process.”
Democrats say dozens of public hearings were held on redistricting and that the maps reflect the unique diversity of the state.
