BLOOMINGTON – A McLean County jury has ordered the former owner of a Twin-Cities hospital to pay $9.1 million to the estate of a Bloomington woman who died from pancreatic cancer.
The jury found Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal was at fault because Linda Smith’s disease went undetected for 2 1/2-years, said Bloomington lawyer Jim Ginzkey, who represented Smith’s estate.
Smith died in March 2019.
The trial started October 4, and the jury deliberated about five hours before returning a verdict.
Jurors determined two other defendants – Dr. Jonathan Foss and Bloomington Radiology – were not responsible for Smith’s death.
Advocate Health Care can appeal the jury’s verdict.
BroMenn is now run by Carle Health, based in Urbana.
