BLOOMINGTON – For the first time, the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington is holding “Christmas in a barn” to sell antique Christmas items.

Jeff Saulsberry with the David Davis Manson said the sale is a garage sale format – except it’s in a barn.

“We’re going to be selling some of the older Christmas decorations that we have used at the mansion, and we’re no longer using that is just taking up a lot of space in the attic. So basically, we are having a garage sale, but it’s in a barn.”

Saulsberry said the sale would take place on the back of the property inside the barn, and the house would be open for tours.

In other business, the mansion is holding “Christmas at the mansion” on Dec. 11 from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.

“The fun part is you can see both mansions. It will be a walk-through tour. There will be music at both events. There will be cookies and some cider, nonalcoholic, of course,” Saulsberry joked with WJBC’s Todd Wineburner. “And the best part is if you wait until four or 4:30 and it’s dark, both buildings are lit up and all their Christmas (inaudible), so it’s quite impressive.”

Saulsberry said the event is a ticketed event, and the cost is $15 per person. Tickets can be purchased online at www.daviddavismansion.org.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
