2021 Trouble in Toyland report

A common thread through this year’s report is that toys sold online – or second-hand – are sometimes not subject to the same regulations as their more credible – albeit expensive – name-brand counterparts. (Photo courtesy illinoispirg.org)

SPRINGFIELD – Anybody who is making a list and checking it twice may want to consult the 2021 Trouble in Toyland report.

“Recalled products still for sale, dangerous products like high-powered magnet sets being marketed to families,” said Nancy Cowles, executive director of Kids in Danger, said at an announcement Thursday, “and the Wild West that is online shopping for many parents; never quite sure if what you are going to get is going to be a safe product or not.”

Abe Scarr, of the Illinois Public Interest Research Group, describes one popular toy which has inspired unsafe imitations. “It’s the GoPop!, originally sold by Foxmind,” he said of the fidget-friendly, push-pop toy. “Because it’s been so popular, there are hundreds of less expensive knock-offs found online or in retail stores.”

Scarr says those off-brand GoPo P! toys could contain dangerous levels of chemicals.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
