NORMAL – Like many forces around the country, the Normal Police Department is calling on those interested to apply for various positions.

Many agencies are looking for new officers, as many left the force over the past couple of years. However, Officer Brad Park with the Normal Police Department said Normal has a leg up on the competitors.

“We feel (the pay) is fairly competitive with some of the other agencies around central Illinois. And you know it’s not just the wages also. You know, a lot of things come into effect with insurance, tuition reimbursement, time off. We have a very good time off package for our officers because nowadays sometimes money isn’t the only thing; it’s getting that time off to go live your life outside of being a police officer.”

Speaking with WJBC’s Todd Wineburner, Officer Park said the department has openings for detectives, patrol officers, and work with the K-9 unit.

“You do need to be able-bodied to able to take on the demands of the job. You know, we try to make sure all of our officers stay not only physically ready to perform the job but also mentally ready to perform the job. With policing nowadays, the mental aspect of it, the ability to make good decisions in a stressful environment, is something to look at.

We just don’t look for the tallest, the strongest, the quickest, or anything like that. We look for people who can make good decisions.”

The starting salary for an officer is $63,000.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
