BLOOMINGTON – McLean County prosecutors are trying a 16-year old Bloomington High School student as an adult on charges he carried a loaded handgun at school earlier this month.
The most serious of the three felony charges against Tayshaun Johnson alleges he carried and possessed a 9 mm pistol to BHS on November 4 that was “uncased, loaded, and immediately accessible.”
Another of the charges accuses Johnson of carrying the gun without a license under the state’s firearm concealed carry act.
A judge set Johnson’s bond at $75,000, and the teen’s next court appearance is scheduled for December 10.
District 87 administrators said in a statement that the gun was found during a search of the student’s possessions, and there was no threat of violence.
Administrators intend to ask the school board to expel the teen after the conclusion of court proceedings.
