SPRINGFIELD – A look back at Illinois weather this year.
February 2021 was brutally cold, with many records set all over the state. Spring and summer featured plenty of rainfall in central and southern Illinois, while the northern part of the state remained dry says State Climatologist Trent Ford.
“The 2021 northern Illinois drought had agricultural and ecological impacts, with a combination of modest, yet timely June and August rain, and persistently high summer humidity lessened drought impacts overall,” said Ford. “Speaking of the humidity, it was unrelenting this year in July and August. The summertime average dewpoint temperatures were five to 10 degrees above average, no doubt playing a role in the prevalence of fungal disease in crops and gardens this growing season.”
September was warm and dry, followed by a wet October and a mild November.
Temperatures in December have been eight to 14 degrees above normal and there’s been severe weather this month including a tornado outbreak on Dec. 10.
