BLOOMINGTON – On the heels of a school shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers in Texas, school districts in central Illinois are reviewing their safety procedures.

According to incoming District 87 Superintendent Dr. David Mouser, safety precautions are in place at the district, however, school administrators are looking to improve safety.

“I don’t have the answer and I wish I did,” said Mouser.

“All educators respond the same way, we are devastated. You pour your heart and soul into kids, you fall in love with them. When you see things like this take place, it’s tragic.”

Currently, the district has safety barriers in place like school cameras and a school resource officer.

“Things like safety and security are always going to be at the top of the list on things that are going to have to be talked about. There’s going to be protocols, there’s going to be things that need to be done in terms of making sure doors are locked and cameras are upgraded. I don’t have the answer and I wish I did,” said Mouser.

Mouser is currently the superintendent of Tri-Valley in Downs and has served in the role since 2014.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
