Students out after pipe bursts at IWU, won’t be reimbursed for damage

BLOOMINGTON – Dozens at students at Illinois Wesleyan University will be relocated for the next semester after a water pipe broke on Christmas Eve.

IWU in Bloomington has to now conduct repairs on the Gates-Fricke student apartments.

This will affect 45 students who have to be relocated for the spring semester while those repairs are done, according to Julia Perez, assistant director of Communications.

The students will also get free meal plans from the school and are being offered single-room housing on campus or the option to move off campus or in with a roommate.

A water pipe in that building broke on Christmas Eve.

But Perez writes that no students were in that section – the third floor – when it happened, due to the holiday break.

Students return for orientation Jan. 9 at Illinois Wesleyan.

Perez added, “Students will not be reimbursed by the University for their personal items.”

While the students are encouraged to consider renter’s insurance or personal, family policies, the University insurance plan covers University property.

Money.com shows the estimated full price to attend IWU for the 2022-23 year at $67,500 before financial aid.

The site also indicates 100% of IWU students get some form of financial grant.
