NORMAL – The top brass of Illinois State University hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday night for the athletic department’s new indoor practice facility.

At over $11 million, the facility is built in the location of the former football practice field directly north of Horton Field House. A 100-yard practice football field features a single end zone with run off areas and artificial turf to match the current surface at Hancock Stadium.

ISU interim athletic director Dr. Jerri Beggs spoke with WJBC’s Scott Miller.

“It’s been a long time coming and Larry Lyons started the dream and others kept it going all these years. Now it is finally here and I’m so excited for our student-athletes and our coaches in terms of recruiting. I love that we have all these community members here to see the facility,” said Beggs.

ISU football was the first team to use the facility as they hosted a practice on Sunday.

“Our administration has done a great job, when Larry (Lyons) was here and now Dr. Beggs bringing this things home and everybody has worked really hard to get this done,” said ISU football head coach Brock Spack. “A lot of these things are raised through corporate money, but this is all from private donors and it is amazing the support we get here from private donors.”

The facility will be open to all Redbird teams and will ease congestion for teams currently using Horton Field House as an indoor practice area.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
