SPRINGFIELD – There were 5.6 days suitable for field work during the week ending October 1, 2023. Statewide, the average temperature was 70.0 degrees, 7.9 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.6 inches, 0.09 inches below normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 22 percent very short, 35 percent short, 42 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 19 percent very short, 44 percent short, and 37 percent adequate.

Corn mature reached 92 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 75 percent. Corn harvested reached 23 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 25 percent. Corn condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 10 percent excellent.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 94 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 73 percent. Soybeans harvested reached 19 percent, equal to the 5-year average. Soybean condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 15 percent excellent.

Winter wheat planted reached 14 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 10 percent. Winter wheat emerged reached 1 percent, equal to the 5-year average.
