SPRINGFIELD – One legacy of the pandemic has been the rise of “working from home.”

The University of Illinois’ Institute of Government and Public Affairs has looked into this, saying about eighteen percent of Illinoisans now regularly work from home.

“We think it’s benefited a lot of employees, who have somewhat more flexibility in their day and have avoided some of the commute,” said David Merriman, interim director of the institute. “We believe it’s also benefited employers, because they have more satisfied employees.”

Many people, Merriman says, like to go into the office at least sometimes. “That’s partly because they have better facilities in the office. They also want to see their co-workers, but clearly there is still some tension between employers and employees about how much work-from-home there should be.”
