Bloomington police are now certified sensory-inclusive

BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Police Department announced on Monday that it partnered with KultureCity to make its services sensory-inclusive.

According to the department, the certification ensures officers are trained to recognize those with sensory needs and how to handle sensory overload situations.

All Bloomington squad cars will have KultureCity Sensory Bags, which will have noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools and verbal cue cards for those in need. A sensory room will also be available at the Bloomington Police Department.

“The Bloomington Police Department is happy to partner with KultureCity to improve our opportunity to better serve those who have autism,” Police Chief Jamal Simington stated. “The training has improved our staff’s awareness, and we look forward to using the sensory bags which were provided to lessen the stress and better engage with children and adults in our community.”Miller Park Zoo to become first sensory certified zoo in Illinois

Sensory overload situations are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions.

“Our communities shape our lives and to know that the Bloomington Police Department is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that everyone, no matter their ability, feels included in community experiences is amazing,” KultureCity Executive Director Uma Srivastava said. “We’re honored to partner with BPD to provide a truly inclusive interaction!”
