Bloomington man arrested on multiple gun charges

BLOOMINGTON – A Bloomington man is in custody Wednesday after being arrested for attempting to enter a vehicle that wasn’t his.

Mohamed Thiam, 22, was arrested on multiple gun charges by Bloomington police officers at around 7:45 a.m. after they found him near the intersection of Aberdeen Way and Kapok Drive

He was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of a felon in possession of a weapon, possession of an assault weapon and burglary without causing damage.

Thiam was confronted while he allegedly attempted to enter a vehicle that did not belong to him. He allegedly responded by brandishing a gun while walking from the scene.

He fled the scene when he saw officers approach. When officers took him into custody, Thiam no longer had a gun on his person. A McLean County Sheriff’s K9 was called to the scene and located a loaded gun in the area Thiam ran past.

“The men and women of the Bloomington Police Department continue to strive to maintain a safe community,” Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington stated. “Safety is enhanced locally when those who illegally possess or use weapons are arrested. We are working harder than ever with the community to quell gun violence.”

He was taken to the McLean County Detention Facility, where he remains on pre-trial detention, according to Bloomington Police Officer Bryce Janssen.
