MCLEAN COUNTY – Normal-based YouthBuild McLean County is one of 100 community projects receiving grant money from Lowe’s Hometowns.

According to a YouthBuild news release, the grant money will go towards a new outdoor learning space including a sports court and gardening beds.

YouthBuild helps kids aged 16-24 who have not graduated high school “develop leadership skills, complete their education and gain job skills.”

Current students have mentioned wanting an outdoor area that can be used for sports or just decompressing.

The Lowe’s Hometowns program is a five-year $100 million effort to revitalize community spaces across the country by developing unused land.

Since starting in 2022, the program has renovated 149 community centers, affordable housing facilities, and shelters and food pantries. In addition, they have refurbished 15 first responder and veteran/military family facilities and built and improved 54 community gardens, parks and playgrounds.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
