SPRINGFIELD – When the big tech companies enable online child abuse, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) wants to hit them in the pocketbook.

“Each time an image of abuse is shared, the victim is exploited all over again. For some victims the abuse weighs on them so tremendously that they take their own lives. Think about that,” said Durbin during a visit to the Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center in Springfield Monday.

Kids find themselves in online situations so dire, they cannot imagine a way out. Kids are dying, and Congress must act.”

Durbin’s bill, which would expose such companies to civil liability, has passed the Senate and awaits a vote in the House.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
