Man taken into custody after gun situation in Tremont

TREMONT – A man was taken into custody Sunday afternoon for allegedly having a gun in the middle of the village of Tremont.

According to the Tremont Police Facebook page, the 38-year-old man allegedly had a shotgun and surrendered to police. He was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

No one was injured during the incident.

Around 4:21 p.m., the Illinois State Police said their troopers went to the small Tazewell County village on a report of a man in the street with a gun. He was near the intersection of North James and East North streets.

The Tremont Police Department posted on their Facebook page that the situation was ” deescalated” and the man surrendered.

Tremont Police, the state police and the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office were on scene as many residents in the area were asked to stay in their homes.

One woman said she heard a knock on her door, only for an officer with a rifle to be on the other side, asking her to not leave her house.
