NORMAL – It was a touchdown frenzy Friday night at Dick Tharp Field and Normal Community (10-1) was able to advance in the IHSA playoffs with a 52-49 win over the Prospect Knights (8-3).

The Ironmen took an early 13-0 lead after the first quarter. But three unanswered touchdowns from the Knights gave Prospect a 21-13 lead at halftime.

Normal Community came out early in the third quarter and scored two quick touchdowns from senior running back Calen Taylor to retake the lead. Then it was back and forth as the teams combined for six touchdowns in the third quarter.

NCHS led early in the fourth quarter 45-35 thanks to a 27-yard field goal from William Castro. But Prospect quarterback Jack Skoog threw two touchdowns in the final period as the Knights retook the lead 49-45 with 3:45 to play.

The Ironmen bounced back and got another rushing touchdown from Taylor as they once again took the lead 52-49 with 1:35 to go. NCHS sealed the game with an interception of Skoog.

For the Ironmen, Taylor rushed for five scores from 16, 14, 76, 1, and 9 yards. Senior quarterback Kyle Beaty had two passing touchdowns, one of those from 38-yards out to senior wide receiver Mar’Quan Gary. Senior wideout Reed Hoover also caught a 13-yard touchdown.

Prospect was led by their senior quarterback as Skoog threw for six touchdowns.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
