BLOOMINGTON – The Board of Education for Bloomington District 87 met Wednesday where they were given a presentation on this year’s proposed tax levy.

The tax levy is the maximum dollar amount that the board of education requests from property taxes. Wednesday’s presentation highlighted that property taxes provide 60% of the district’s revenue and is a reliable source of funding.

Superintendent David Mouser said the district intends to lower the tax rate for this upcoming year.

“People’s property values are continuing to increase,” Mouser said. “We’ve seen these EAV increases go really high recently, and for us what’s really important is that we maintain that tax rate or lower it,” he said.

Mouser said while property values have increased, the district plans to lower people’s tax rates.

“We’re going to lower our individual tax rate here because we feel like it’s the right thing to do at this time while still also making sure that we provide the services necessary for our students,” he said.

There will be a public hearing on the tax levy next month.

Board members also approved a school improvement plan for each of the schools in the district, as well as agreed to give money to the Bloomington Area Career Center.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
