NORMAL – The Normal Fire Department is letting people know just how massive the Los Angeles fires have been over the last two days.

Facebook post the fire department posted this weekend went viral. The post explains that just the Palisades fire would cover more than double the area of the entire town of Normal.

Matt Swaney, the public information officer with the Normal Fire Department, said he hopes the post clears up misinformation about the fires.

“There’s a lack of education on how a lot of things work,” Swaney said. “And so people will try to make connections to make it make sense because you just can’t wrap your head around something like this. It’s important for people when they’re hearing information from a disaster area to know that that information is coming as fast as possible. But it has to be verified because people can get hurt, people can get killed if they’re given misinformation or wrong information”

Information on how you can donate to those impacted by the fires is available here.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
