WOODFORD COUNTY – A Germantown Hills native is now the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.

U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood made the announcement Thursday on his Facebook page, saying he was “thrilled” that Kevin McCumber was appointed by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

McCumber has been the acting House Clerk since June 2023, according to LaHood’s office.

“Kevin grew up in Woodford County, in Illinois’ 16th Congressional District. From a young age, Mr. McCumber showed a faithful commitment to our country,” the Dunlap Republican said. “In 1996, he was nominated to participate in the United States House of Representatives Page program for high school students.”

It was Darin LaHood’s father, Ray LaHood, who had nominated McCumber, a Metamora Township High School graduate, for the program.

He returned to Woodford County where he worked for the sheriff’s office as a dispatcher before going back to Washington for another seven-year stint in the House Clerks’ office.

He then went to the University of Colorado and worked for the Lakewood Police Department which is just outside of Denver. In 2012, he returned to the House Clerk’s office where he has been since.

“After a combined 20 years on Capitol Hill serving in the Clerk’s office, I have no doubt he has the experience and skill set required to serve the House of Representatives in this role. I am proud and honored to have a native son of Central Illinois selected for this very important position,” LaHood said.

House Clerks prepare and print the House Journal after each session of Congress, certify the passage of all bills and joint resolutions, and receive messages from the President of the United States when the House is not in session.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
