FLORENCE, Ky. – The Normal CornBelters won a pitcher’s duel 1-0 in the opener, but dropped the nightcap of a doubleheader 6-1 on Wednesday night at UC Health Stadium.
Pitchers ruled the opener as Belters starter Chris Carmain allowed only one hitter over the minimum through the first seven innings, surrendering only two hits, and Freedom starter Jeremy Gooding allowed just one hit in his six innings. The Belters’ third hit was the game-winner as Cameron Monger led off the 10th inning with a home run to left field.
Horatio Acosta (6-0) pitched the ninth and 10th innings and was aided by two line-out double plays to get out of jams and pick up the win. Race Parmenter allowed a lead-off walk in the 10th but earned his 14th save. Seth Harvey (2-3) suffered the loss.
In the nightcap, the Belters scored in the third inning when Monger drew a lead-off walk, went to third on a double by Mark Micowski and scored on a two-out infield single by Aaron Dudley.
The Freedom took advantage of two walks and a hit batter to load the bases in the fourth inning and tie the game at 1-1 with a single to left by Travis Weaver, then grabbed a 5-1 lead in the fifth with an RBI single by Collins Cuthrell and a bases-loaded-and-clearing double by Andrew Godbold. The hosts added insurance with a lead-off home run in the sixth inning by Matt Rubino for a 6-1 lead.
Chuck Weaver (5-3) threw a complete-game four-hitter for the win. Chandler Jagodzinski (1-4) pitched the fifth inning and took the loss.
The road trip concludes with a 5:35 p.m. Central game in suburban Cincinnati as righthander Kevin Jefferis (1-0, 3.72 ERA) returns to the CornBelters to start on the mound. The Freedom counter with righthander Tony Vocca (3-1, 2.36). The game can be heard on WJBC-AM 1230 and WJBC.com.
